- Friday 5/30/03
- This week, Katarina has been at the Belgian International Juniors Championships (actually the "39th Astrid Bowl" - a Grade-1 ITF Juniors event, played outdoors on clay) in (or near) Charleroi, Belgium, Europe.
- And Kat has continued to do quite nicely!
- Placed in the Main Draw, in 1st Round (Round of 64) it was Katarina Zoricic (unseeded) vs. Teodora Mircic of Yugoslavia (also unseeded). Kat got the win in 2: 6-4, 6-3. YEA!
- In the 2nd Round, Kat faced Finland's Emma Laine (the #4 seed). This was a tough loss (1-6, 3-6 - oh well...), but Laine looks like a worthy competitor for Kat in the future: OK with that!
- Then there was also Doubles (kind-of....).
- Katarina teamed with Megan Moulton-Levy (USA), who she has teamed with before (with considerable success!), and they were appropriately seeded #1 and given a 1st Round "bye". YEA! They then took their 2nd Round with a "walkover" (Yea?), but were out in the 3rd Round, via another "walkover" (huh?).
- SO: This was an OK week for Kat, on court. A good win in Main Draw Singles, then a loss, unseeded, to the #4 seed (big deal...). And Kat-Megan made it to 3rd Round! (Huh?)
- And this was a good week for Belgian tennis fans, who got to see Kat play, and very many probably became Zoricic fans forever!
- WELL DONE KAT!
- Next for Kat is maybe the famous red clay of Roland Garros, which would be nice. Katarina can make TONS of new fans in Paris, and really SHOW HER STUFF!
- Mostly I hope every day for Katarina is this: FUN!

- Today, on the red clay of Roland Garros, in the "Girls" division of the Grand Slam French Open, Katarina (unseeded) played an EXCELLENT match vs. the #2 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany.
- It was a loss, though (3-6, 2-6), but seemed much closer than that on the Java Scoreboard.
- It went like this (Kat served 1st): ?-?, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 3-5, 3-6, 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6. Oh well....
- In more detail: In the 1st set, Java Scoreboard gave me no detail for the 1st two games, but good detail after that. After 1-1, Kat went down 0-40, came back to 30-40, but was broken: 1-2. AG then went down 0-15, came back to 40-15, then Kat took it to deuce, then AG held after an add: 1-3. Kat then went up 40-0 and held after 40-15: 2-3. Then AG held at love: 2-4. Then Kat went up 30-0, then it was 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, hold: 3-4. AG then went up 15-0, Kat came back to 15-15, but AG held after 40-15: 3-5. Then Kat went up 15-0, but was broken for the set after 15-40: 3-6. Oh well....
- In the 2nd set, with AG serving 1st, the score went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 40-30, deuce, add-KZ, deuce, add-AG, hold: 0-1. This game clearly showed that Kat was still very much in this match! The 2nd game went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 1-1. Then, AG serving, the score went 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, deuce, add-KZ, break: 2-1, Kat up a break! Then it was 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, break: 2-2, back on serve. Then AG went down 0-30, came back to 30-30, went down 30-40, came back to deuce, and held: 2-3. Then Kat went down 0-30, came back to 15-30, but was broken after 15-40: 2-4. The next game went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40 (double break chance for Kat!), 30-40, deuce, add-AG, hold: 2-5. Kat was then broken at love for the match: 2-6. Oh well....

- Facing the #2 seed in 1st Round at Roland Garros comes clearly under the category of "stuff happens" (to quote Forrest Gump). Someone has to do it....
- Even so, it seems that Kat gave the crowd a very good show, and the "star" a good scare! (What if Kat is a top seed next year? Oh, I guess I will be able to handle that!)
- WELL DONE KAT!
- Now, maybe Kat-Megan will play some Doubles. That would be NICE!

- Katarina has teamed with usual partner (lately) Megan Moulton-Levy (they seem to be a VERY GOOD team!) to play "Girls" Doubles at Roland Garros. With no seedings for anyone in this draw (for some reason), Kat/Megan today faced the team of Montinee Tangphong/Thassha Vitayaviroj, both of Thailand, in 1st Round.
- And it was an AMAZING match! And a WIN for KM: 7-6(8-6), 7-5. YOW and WOW!
- It went like this (Kat served 1st): 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 3-3, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, 5-6, 6-6 (0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4, 6-4, 6-5, 6-6, 7-6, 8-6), 7-6, 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, 6-5, 7-5. YEA!
- In more detail: In the 1st set, Java Scoreboard gave me no detail for the 1st game, except that Kat held sometime after 40-15: 1-0. Then, with TV serving, the score went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 40-15, then Java Scoreboard showed a hold by TV, then called it back with a 40-30 score (disputed point?). Then Kat-Megan took it to deuce, but TV got the add, then the hold: 1-1. The next game (Megan serving) went 15-0, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40, break: 1-2, oh well... Then TV went up 40-0, and held after 40-15: 1-3. KM then did identically: 2-3. The next game, somehow, went to at least 1 deuce, then KM got the add, and broke back: 3-3, back on serve. Then, Megan serving, the score went 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, break: 3-4. Then, TV serving, the score went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 30-40, break: 4-4, back on serve. With Kat serving, the score went 15-0, 30-0, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, hold: 5-4. Then TV also held as follows: 15-0, 30-0, 30-15, 30-30, 40-30: 5-5. Then, Megan serving, the score went 15-0, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, deuce, add-TV, deuce, add-TV, deuce, add-TV, deuce, add-TV, break: 5-6. Then TV were broken at love: 6-6, tie-break time!
- In the tie-break, KM served 1st, and were mini-broke: 0-1. Then, from TV, was a hold and a mini-break: 1-2, back on serve. Then KM did also a hold and a mini-break: 2-3. Then, again, TV did a hold and a mini-break: 3-4, back on-serve. Then Kat-Megan held twice for 5-4, keeping things on-serve. Then TV were mini-broke for 6-4, but held for 6-5. Then KM (serving for 2nd set-point) were mini-broke for 6-6, then held for 7-6. A mini-break of TV gave the tie-break, and set, to KM: 7-6(8-6). YEA!
- In the 2nd set: TV served 1st and the score went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 0-1. Then Kat held identically: 1-1. Then TV held at love, and Megan did likewise: 2-2. Then TV served and held, 15-0, 30-0, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, hold: 2-3. (Things were clearly heating up!) Then Kat held, with some difficulty, 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, deuce, add-KM, hold: 3-3. Then TV went up 15-0, but were broken after 15-40: 4-3. Then, Megan serving, the score went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40, 30-40, break: 4-4. Then TV went up 30-0, then down 30-40, and were broken: 5-4. Then, with Kat serving, it went 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, break: 5-5, back on serve. With TV serving, a very important game went through 12 points: 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, deuce, add-TV, deuce, add-TV, deuce, add-KM, break: 6-5. Then, with Megan serving for the match, the score went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, hold: 7-5. YEA!
- (Although it is worth noting that Kat held 5 of her 6 service games, and Megan held only 2 of 6 (I don't know who was serving in the tie-break), my hunch, after having seen very many Doubles matches, involving many pairs, is that both Kat and Megan won this match, very much! A partner can be a GREAT partner, regardless of how her service games go.)
- This was a GREAT Victory for both Kat and Megan! It was "come from behind" in the 1st set, and the tie-break, and even (kind-of) in the 2nd set. WOW and WOW again!

- Today, at the French Open (Roland Garros), Katarina and her partner Megan Moulton-Levy played 2nd Round "Girls" Doubles vs. Andrea Hlavackova (CZE)/Aurelija Miseviciute (LTU). Both teams were unseeded (actually the whole draw was unseeded).
- And Kat/Megan played VERY WELL! But it was a loss: 3-6, 3-6. Oh well....
- It went like this (KM, unknown which one, served 1st): 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, 3-5, 3-6, 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 3-5, 3-6. Oh well....
- In more detail: In the 1st set, Java Scoreboard gave me no detail for the 1st game, except that KM held: 1-0. Then HM went up 15-0, KM came back to 15-15, but HM held after 40-15: 1-1. HM then held at love for 3-5, and the final game of the set went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40, 30-40, break: 3-6. Oh well....
- So Kat/Megan went up a break to 3-1, then lost 5 games in a row. I suppose that falls under the category of "oops". Even so, It looks like they played quite well, and probably even better in the 2nd set. That's OK!

But then the next game went 15-0, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40, break, and the final game went 40-0, 40-15, hold: 3-6. Oh well...
- Despite this being a loss, it seems clear that Kat/Megan played quite well! HOORAY for that!
- Next for Kat (and Kat/Megan?) may be the "Girls" at Wimbledon, or maybe something before that.
- Katarina seems to be playing very well lately, and could have a very nice run at Wimbledon this year. Maybe it's "no big deal", but maybe it's do-able? Maybe we'll see.
- Mostly, of course, I hope EVERY DAY for Kat is VERY MUCH FUN!
- (For some reason, I think I'll mention something here: Last fall, Katarina won the Chanda Rubin here at Hilton Head. The previous year, the winner was Maria Sharapova. Sharapova then made it to last year's Finals at the Wimbledon Girls, and has done quite well as a Pro this year. Hmmm....)

- Friday 6/27/03
- This week, Katarina has been at the LTA International Junior Championships (a Grade 1 event) in Roehampton, England, Europe - and doing some GOOD things!
- In 1st Round Singles it was Katarina Zoricic vs. Marta Domachowska of Poland (seedings unknown). Well, this was a loss: 2-6, 3-6. Oh well... But it was good experience on grass, and there was probably a considerable crowd, and surely at least most of them became forever Kat-fans, despite the loss. That's OK!
- So then it was Doubles time! Katarina teamed again (as usual) with Megan Moulton-Levy (USA) and I think they were seeded #7. First Round was vs. Heidi El Tabakh/Tarryn Rudman (unknown countries, unseeded?). This was a NICE win for Kat/Megan: 6-3, 6-3. YEA!
- The 2nd Round was KM vs. Rui Du/Sheng-Nan Sun (unseeded?), both of China. This was another win, but more challenging: 7-5, 6-4. IMPRESSIVE! YEA!
- In 3rd Round (the Quarterfinals) it was Kat/Megan vs. Viktoriya Azarenka/Volha Havartsova (unseeded?), both of BLR (Belarus?). Well, this was a loss: 4-6, 5-7. Oh well....
- Even so, this was a good run for Kat/Megan, validating their seeding, and very good experience for Kat on grass - including the Singles. And probably at least hundreds became forever Kat-fans - that's a GOOD THING!
- WELL DONE Kat, and Kat/Megan, WELL DONE! And CHEERIO!
- Next for Kat (and Kat/Megan, probably) is (maybe?) the Junior Championships at Wimbledon, England, Europe, possibly starting tomorrow.

- Katarina began her 2003 Wimbledon with a Juniors Singles match vs. Tarryn Rudman (RSA - Republic of South Africa), who she had defeated (with Megan) in Doubles in Roehampton a few days ago. Both players were unseeded. It was the 1st match of the day (noon start) on Court #11. There was a good crowd watching (this is Wimbledon, after all, and "People's Saturday".)
- Kat won: 6-0, 6-0! YOW! WOW! And WOW AGAIN!
- It went like this (TR served 1st): 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-0, 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 6-0. YEA! (I realize that this progression is not particularly meaningful - but I just HAD TO!)
- In more detail: In the 1st set, Java Scoreboard gave me no detail for the 1st and 2nd games, and just 0-30 (which became a break for Kat), and 40-30 (a hold for Kat), in the 3rd and 4th games: 4-0. The next game (TR serving) went 15-0, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40, 30-40, break: 5-0. Then (Kat serving) it was 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, then Kat held some time after that: 6-0. YEA!
- In the 2nd set, I think Java Scoreboard showed every point. TR served the 1st game, and the score went: 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, deuce, add-KZ, deuce, add-KZ, break: 1-0. (TR had no hold chance, Kat broke on her 3rd chance.) Then Kat served to 40-0, than held after 40-15: 2-0. The next game went 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 15-40, 30-40, break: 3-0. Then Kat went up 30-0, then it was 30-15, 40-15, hold: 4-0. Kat then broke at love, and held at love, for the match: 6-0. YEA! And WOWIE ZOWIE!
- My 2nd set tally has TR getting 8 points, and KZ getting 26 points. That's a huge WOW, eh?
- Next for Kat will be the winner of a Monday match - possibly a seeded player, maybe Tuesday. The Doubles Draw is not yet released.

- Tuesday 7/1/03
- Kat played a Singles match QUITE WELL today - however, her opponent played somewhat better. Oh well....
- Today, on Court #16 of the grass courts of Wimbledon (The Championships!), it was Katarina Zoricic (unseeded) vs. Jarmila Gajdosova (SVK - seeded #4) in 2nd Round Girls Singles.
- Well... Gajdosova prevailed: 6-2, 6-1. Oh well... But it was closer than the score indicates!
- In the 1st 4 games, Kat held at 30, but JG needed to pass through deuce to hold. Then JG won at love, twice, but in the last two games of this 1st set, Kat got to 30.
- In the 2nd set, Kat took the 1st game through deuce before being broken, Kat then got to 30 before JG held, then Kat held at love (YEA!), then Kat had a break chance, but JG held after 2 deuces, then Kat got to 30, then 30, then 15 - but all those were lost games. Oh well...
- This looks to me like a case of the unseeded player played quite well, but not quite as well as the Seeded #4 player (but probably better than the Seeded #4 player expected!).
- ANYWAY: It went like this (Kat served 1st): 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6, 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6. Oh well...

- In this set, Kat had no break chances, but was 2 for 2 in hold chances. Meanwhile, although JG was 2 for 2 in break chances, she was only 2 for 4 in hold chances. Hmmm....
- In the 2nd set, Kat serving 1st, the score went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 30-40, deuce, add-JG, break: 0-1. The next game went 0-15, 15-15, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, hold: 0-2. Then Kat held at love: 1-2 (YEA!). The next game went ?-?, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 30-40 (break chance for Kat, to put the set back on serve!), deuce, add-JG, deuce, add-JG, hold: 1-3. (Oh well...) Then it was 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, break, then 0-15, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 1-5. The final game went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 15-40, break: 1-6. Oh well....
- In this 2nd set, Kat was 0 for 1 in break chances, and JG was 3 for 4. Meanwhile, Kat was 1 for 1 in hold chances, while JG was only 3 for 4. Whatever....
- Regardless, my very much hunch is that today Katarina acquired a TON of new forever fans!
- And that the #4 seed defeated an unseeded player is not particularly "shocking"!
- Katarina had a good run in Girls Singles at The Championships this year - a GREAT 1st Round victory, and an impressive 2nd Round match!
- So now it's DOUBLES TIME!
- Kat is teaming, again, with Megan Moulton-Levy (I'm OK with that!) in Wimbledon Girls Doubles, and in 1st Round, tomorrow (the 3rd match on Court #9), KM (unseeded) will face the team of Megan Falcon (USA)/Adriana Gonzalez Penas (ESP), also unseeded. (There are 16 teams in this tournament, only 4 are seeded.)
- WIN, Kat/Megan, WIN! And, both of you, HAVE FUN!

- Today, at the Junior Championships, Wimbledon, London, England, Europe, it was 1st Round Girls' Doubles: Katarina Zoricic (CAN)/Megan Moulton-Levy (USA) vs. Megan Falcon (USA)/Adriana Gonzalez Penas (ESP) - both teams unseeded (postponed from yesterday, due to rain).
- Yesterday, it was scheduled on Court #9, but today it was finally played on Court #11.
- Well... Falcon/Penas prevailed: 6-2, 6-2. Oh well... But it was closer than the score indicates!
- In the 1st Set, FP held at 30, then 2 wins by FP at 15 made 0-3. Then 2 wins by Kat/Megan at 15 put the set back on serve: 2-3. But then a break at 15, a hold at 30, and a break, through 3 deuces(!), gave the set to FP: 2-6. Oh well...
- In the 2nd set, FP held at 15 (2nd chance), then broke after 4 deuces (3rd chance), then held after a deuce (1st chance): 0-3. Then holds at 30, 30, 15, and 30 made 2-5. In the final game, FP got the break, and match, after 2 deuces, on their 3rd(?) chance: 2-6. Oh well...
- This looks like the FP team played mostly better than the KM team, although the KM team played quite well, and to the last point. Whatever... Oh well...

- I am CERTAIN that London thanks Kat (and Megan!) VERY MUCH for playing this match. Very NICE TRY Kat/Megan!

- In the meantime, Katarina, take care, have fun, and play well. You have tremendous talent and ability. You will do what you will do, and whatever you do is fine with all who love you, provided that what you do is what you want to do.
