HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Katarina!
-
- Sunday 1/18/04
-
Katarina has won ALL of her matches this year! YEA!
- (That's 1 for 1!)
- Today, at the Uncle Toby's Australian Junior Hardcourt, in Melbourne, it was Kat d. Lindsay Burdette (USA): 6-2, 6-3. YEA!
- This was the 1st Round (Round of 64) - Kat was placed in the Main Draw (unseeded), Burdette was seeded #2 in Qualifying and won 2 rounds (fairly quickly) to advance to the Main Draw.
- This is a very fine and good win, Kat!
- The 2nd Round (Round of 32) for Kat will be vs. Sanja Ancic (CRO)(seeded #9), probably Tuesday. This will be another good test for Kat (and a good show for the crowd, probably), while Kat shows her tremendous Spirit and Ability and grabs the upset!
- Win, Kat, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
- Meanwhile, Kat is also playing Doubles (that's GOOD!), teaming with fellow Canadian Stephanie Dubois.
- They are seeded #5 in the Main Draw, and their 1st Round (Round of 32) will be vs. (unseeded) Verdiana Veradi (ITA)/Masa Zec-Peskiric (SLO), probably tomorrow.
- Win, Kat/Steph, WIN! And HAVE FUN!

Katarina has won ALL of her matches this year! YEA!
- (That's 2 for 2!)
- Today, at the Uncle Toby's Australian Junior Hardcourt, in Melbourne, it was 1st Round Doubles (Round of 32): Katarina Zoricic/Stephanie Dubois (CAN)(seeded #5) d. Verdiana Veradi (ITA)/Masa Zec-Peskiric (SLO): 6-3, 7-5. YEA!
- Very nice win, Kat/Steph! And a good show for the crowd!
- This is another very fine and good win, Kat!
- The 2nd Round (Round of 16) for Kat/Steph will be vs. (unseeded) Nina Henkel (GER)/Stefanie Rath (AUS), maybe tomorrow. This will be another good test for Kat/Steph. Maybe Kat/Steph can be a GREAT Doubles Team!
- Win again, Kat/Steph, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
- Also, tomorrow, Katarina will probably play her 2nd Round Singles (Round of 32) vs. the #9 seed Sanja Ancic.
- Win again, Kat, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
-
- Tuesday 1/20/04
-
Well, Katarina is now 2 for 3 in 2004. That's OK!
- Today, at the Uncle Toby's Australian Junior Hardcourt, in Melbourne, it was 2nd Round Singles (Round of 32): Katarina Zoricic (unseeded) vs. Sanja Ancic (seeded #9).
- Well, Ancic d. Zoricic: 6-3, 6-3. Oh well...
- So now it's DOUBLES TIME!
- Win again, Kat/Steph, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
-
- Sunday 1/25/04
-
Kat had a quite good Uncle Toby's this year!
- Unseeded in Singles, it took a seeded player to prevent her advance. That's OK...
- Seeded #5 in Doubles (teaming with also Canadian Stephanie Dubois - a good team, I think!), Kat/Steph played fully to their seeding with a nice, crowd-pleasing win over an unseeded team in the 1st Round (Round of 32 - described below).
- Then, in the Round of 16, it was a very dramatic victory, which no one in the crowd will ever forget, over the (also unseeded) team of Nina Henkel (GER)/Stefanie Rath (AUT): 6-7(6-8), 6-3, 6-4. YEA!
- In the Semi's, it was Kat/Steph (seeded #5) vs. Ana Ivanovic (YUG)/Alla Kudryavtseva (RUS) (seeded #4).
- Well, the #4 seeds defeated the #5 seeds: 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Not an upset. Even so: oh well...
- This was a good Uncle Toby's for Kat (and Kat/Steph!) - not great, but plenty good!
- So now it's on to the Grand Slam Australian Open Girls. It is entirely appropriate for Kat to be in the group of 64 best-on-the-whole-planet Junior Girls playing tennis!
- First Round (Round of 64) for Katarina (unseeded) will be vs. (unseeded) Michelle Mitchell (USA) - tomorrow, the 4th match on Court #11.
- I have seen MM play, and she is a tenacious tiger, but Kat is very much the better player.
- Win, Kat, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
- (The Girls Doubles Draw is not yet released - but I hope Kat/Steph are in there! And they should be seeded!)
-
- Monday 1/26/04
-
It's a good thing that this is written, and not spoken, 'cause I'm almost unable to speak now after shouting at this eMac showing the point-by-point from Melbourne for the past hour+.
- KATARINA WON!!!
- In 1st Round (Round of 64) Girls Singles at the Grand Slam Australian Open, in Melbourne, Australia, today, it was Katarina Zoricic vs. Michelle Mitchell (USA), both unseeded.
- KATARINA WON: 6-2, 6-3. YEA!! And YEA!!! And HOORAY!!!!
- It was closer than the score indicates, but not by much. Even so, it was plenty exciting!
- It went like this (MM served 1st): 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2, 6-2, 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, 5-3, 6-3. YEA!
- In more detail: I got to the Java Scoreboard with Kat having the Add after at least one deuce in the 1st game - Kat then got the break: 1-0. Kat then held at love for 2-0. MM then went down 0-15, but 4 straight points gave her the hold: 2-1. The next game (Kat serving) then went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 3-1. Then, with MM serving, it went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 30-40 (break chance for Kat), deuce, add-MM, deuce, add-MM, hold: 3-2. Then Kat went down 0-30, came back to 40-30, then finally held after a deuce: 4-2. After MM went up 15-0, four straight points gave the break to Kat: 5-2. Kat took the 1st set with a hold as follows: 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, hold: 6-2. YEA!
- In the 2nd set (MM serving 1st again) it went 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, break: 1-0. Then the 2nd game was an almost mirror: 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 2-0. Then MM went down 0-15, came back to 30-15, then it was 30-30, but 2 straight points gave the hold to MM: 2-1. In the next game, Kat went down 0-15, came back to 15-15, then went down 15-40, came back to 30-40, but was then broken: 2-2. Then MM held at love: 2-3. (Uh-oh..) Kat held the next game, barely: 0-15, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 3-3. MM then went up 30-0, but Kat came back to 30-40, and got the break after a deuce: 4-3. The next game (Kat serving) also passed through a deuce: 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 40-15, 40-30, deuce, add-KZ, hold: 5-3. MM was then broken at love for the match: 6-3. YEA!
- This was a very good victory for Kat! Michelle Mitchell is totally deserving of being in that "group of 64" of the "world's best" - it was just her tough luck that she had to face Kat in 1st Round!
- Next for Kat (Round of 32) will be vs. Yurika Sema of Japan (unseeded). This looks like another nice challenge for Katarina.
- Win again, Kat, WIN AGAIN! And HAVE FUN!
- (The Girls Doubles Draw is still not yet released - but I hope Kat/Steph are in there! And they should be seeded!)
-
- Wednesday 1/28/04
-
Katarina's 1st Round Doubles (with Stephanie Dubois) was originally scheduled for yesterday, but was postponed to today (due to weather, probably).
- But before the Doubles today, Kat played her 2nd Round (Round of 32) Singles vs. Yurika Sema of Japan (unseeded) on Court 18.
- Well, Sema prevailed: 6-4, 6-3. Oh well...
- Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I have no further detail of this match, except that the stats posted at the AO site indicate that the 1st set was very close, and the 2nd set less so.
- So then it was DOUBLES TIME! And GOOD NEWS!
- In 1st Round Girls Doubles (Round of 32) it was Katarina Zoricic/Stephanie Dubois (both CAN)(7) vs. Michelle Brycki/Shayna McDowell (both AUS)(unseeded) on Court 19.
- Although not an upset, this was a GOOD WIN for ZD: 6-3, 1-6, 6-3! YEA! And probably a good show for the crowd!
- (Again, unfortunately, I have no further detail of this match at this time.)
- Scheduled for Court #6 tomorrow is 2nd Round Girls Doubles: the Canadian team of Zoricic/Dubois (7) vs. the American (unseeded) team of Michelle Mitchell/Katrina Tsang.
- Considering that this is seeded vs. unseeded, and Kat defeated Mitchell in 1st Round Singles, this looks very winnable for ZD, although it will also probably be a good challenge.
- Win again, Kat/Steph (ZD), WIN AGAIN! And HAVE FUN!
- (Hopefully I will be able to provide some details...)
-
- Thursday 1/29/04
-
Today, at the Grand Slam Australian Open, it was 2nd Round (Round of 16) Girls Doubles: Katarina Zoricic/Stephanie Dubois (both CAN)(7) vs. Michelle Mitchell/Katrina Tsang (both USA)(unseeded).
- Originally scheduled for Court #6, this match was moved to Vodafone Arena (for some reason) - and I'm sure that the Tournament organizers are very glad that they did so!
- WOW! WHAT A MATCH! WOW!
- MT took the 1st set: 7-5. Then ZD did likewise. The third set went to 6-6 so it was tie-break time. The tie-break went to 7-7.
- Well, then MT d. ZD, and got the upset, with a 9-7 tie-break win. It took about 3 hours. Oh well...
- Although this was a loss for Kat/Steph, it may have been the GREATEST MATCH of the 1000 or so played at this tournament! THAT AIN'T HAY!
- (It is probably fortunate that I have no further detail of this match. If I had watched this on Java Scoreboard I would probably be now beginning weeks of heart-attack recovery in a hospital, instead of writing this.)
- This was a good, or better than good, Australian Open for Kat this year - including some GREATNESS!
- Katarina has begun 2004 in fine form, playing quite well. This year will have challenges, setbacks, and TRIUMPHS!
- Kat: take care, play well, and HAVE FUN!
- What will be, will be...

- Tuesday 3/9/04
-
Lately, Katarina has been swinging that paddle down in South America - and giving the crowds some excellent shows!
- Last week, it was the 25th Argentina Cup, a clay outdoors Grade 2 tournament at Club Nautico in Mar del Playa, Argentina, South America.
- Kat was seeded #2 in Singles (quite appropriately!) and drew a bye in the Round of 64.
- In the Round of 32 Singles, it was Katarina Zoricic (seeded #2) vs. Estefania Craciun (URU - unseeded).
- Kat got the win(!), in a match which was clearly a good show for the crowd: 6-3, 7-6(7-3). YEA!
- The Round of 16 Singles was KZ vs. Katherine Baker (GBR - seeded #14).
- This was an upset (although, probably, another good show for the crowd!) with Baker getting the victory: 6-4, 6-4. Oh well...
- Kat also played Doubles there in Argentina (and that's a GOOD THING!), teaming with compatriot Ekatarina Shulaeva - they were seeded #5 (with much justification!).
- In 1st Round (Round of 32), they rightly drew a bye.
- The 2nd Round was a very nice(!) victory over the unseeded team of Maria Ignacia Gioria (ARG)/Madelaine Madelaire (PAR): 6-1, 6-2. YEA!
- In the Quarterfinals, it was ZS (seeded #5) vs. Teodora Mircic (SCG)/Mariana Muci (VEN) (seeded #4).
- Well, this was not an upset. MM d. ZS: 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Oh well...
- Probably another good show for the crowd, though, eh? YEA!
- This week, Kat is at the 24th Asuncion Bowl, a Grade 1, clay, outdoor, tournament at the Yacht and Golf Club in Lambare, Paraguay, South America.
- Katarina is seeded #11 in the Main Draw Singles and faces Sarah Aulombard (FRA - unseeded) in 1st Round (Round of 64).
- Win, Kat, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
- The Doubles Draw is not yet released.
- (An observation: in Juniors it seems seedings are well deserved, yet very hard to defend.)
-
- Saturday 3/13/04
-
At the 24th Asuncion Bowl, in Paraguay, this week, in Main Draw Singles (Round of 64) it was KZ (seeded #11) vs. (unseeded) Sarah Aulombard (FRA).
- This was a GREAT win for Kat: 6-1, 6-2. YEA!
- The 2nd Round was not so great, though, with KZ losing to (unseeded) Regina Kulikova (RUS): 6-4, 6-2. Oh well...
- Kat chose to also play Doubles at this Tournament - and that's a GOOD THING!
- Katarina again teamed with also Canadian Ekaterina Shulaeva, and they were unseeded as they faced the also unseeded team of Lucia Betti (ARG)/Teresa Oberti (ARG) in the 1st Round (Round of 32).
- ZS got a GREAT and DRAMATIC win: 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. YEA!
- In 2nd Round, though, it was ZS (unseeded) vs. the #7 seeds: Maraike Biglmaier (GER)/Magdalena Kiszczynska (POL).
- Well, this was a loss (but not an upset): 6-2, 6-1. Oh well...
- (By the way, BK went on to the Final, and lost in a very close match.)
- So this Tournament was 2 wins and 2 losses: that's OK!
- Next for Kat is probably the Banana Bowl in Brazil - a "big deal" Grade A Tournament.
- Win, Kat, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
-
- Tuesday 3/16/04
-
This week Katarina is at the Banana Bowl at the Esporte Clube Pinheiros, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, South America - a Grade A outdoors clay tournament.
- Kat is in the Main Draw (not having to Qualify, and that's good, and appropriate!). In 1st Round (Round of 64) Kat (unseeded) faces the #11 seed, Jana Jurikova of Slovakia.
- (The Doubles draw is not released.)
- Win, Kat, WIN! And HAVE FUN!
-
- Friday 3/19/04
-
This week Katarina has been at the Banana Bowl at the Esporte Clube Pinheiros, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, South America - a Grade A outdoors clay tournament.
- Kat didn't have to Qualify (this was justifiable and appropriate respect for Kat's talent and abilities!).
- In 1st Round Singles (Round of 64) it was Kat (unseeded) vs. the #11 seed, Jana Jurikova of Slovakia. Well: JJ d. KZ: 6-4, 6-2. Oh well... (Not an "upset", at least, eh?)
- Katarina teamed again (as usual lately) with also Canadian Ekatarina Shulaeva in Doubles. They were placed in the Main Draw Doubles, without having to Qualify. (YEA!)
- In 1st Round Doubles (Round of 32) it was Katarina Zoricic (CAN)/Ekaterina Shulaeva (CAN) vs. Sharon Fichman (CAN)/Anna Tatishvili (GEO) - both teams unseeded.
- Well, this was a loss. FT d. ZS: 6-4, 6-3. Oh well...
- Lately, Katarina has played well, and given many crowds very good shows, but there has been very little "spectacular". Playing very well, and giving crowds a "good show" is a very huge and important accomplishment, but doing the "spectacular", at least occasionally, is what the "real" players do.
- On the other hand (a truly equal hand, at least!), it's all really about being a teen, travelling, making friends, and HAVING FUN! YEA!
-
- Friday 3/26/04
-
Brazil again! This week Katarina has been at the 26th Gerdau Tennis Cup at the Sociedadei Ginastica, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, South America - a Grade 1 outdoors clay tournament.
- Kat was again placed in the Main Draw (although unseeded - but didn't have to Qualify).
- In 1st Round Singles (Round of 64) it was Kat (unseeded) vs. (also unseeded) Catalina Cruz of Columbia. This was a victory for Kat (YEA!), but not much of a match. Kat won the 1st game, then Cruz retired (unknown why - I hope she's ok, of course): 1-0, ret..
- This set up a nicely challenging 2nd Round for Kat vs. the #1 seed, Marina Erikovic of New Zealand.
- A witness reports that both players were "playing solid" and this was a very exciting match for the crowd. Katarina took the 1st set 6-4, then the 2nd set went to a tie-break. But Kat lost the tie-break 7-2, then the 3rd set 6-2, so the match went to the #1 seed. (Oh well..)
- Even so, well done, Kat!
- Katarina teamed again (as usual lately) with also Canadian Ekatarina Shulaeva in Doubles. They were placed in the Main Draw Doubles (unseeded, though), without having to Qualify. (YEA!)
- (By the way, Shulaeva had her own tough draw in Singles, facing the #2 seed, Agnes Szavay of Hungary, in the 1st Round. A report from the stands says that Kat was cheering ES on enthusiastically, as she took the 1st set 7-6(7-4), but then the #2 seed took the next two sets 6-2. Oh well..)
- In 1st Round Doubles (Round of 32) it was Katarina Zoricic (CAN)/Ekaterina Shulaeva (CAN) vs. the (also unseeded) Brazilian team of Nicole Buitoni/Teliana Pereira. This was a very impressive and exciting win for ZS, and clearly a GREAT show for the crowd! YEA!
- After (somehow) losing the 1st set 0-6, ZS came back to take the 2nd set, in what must have been a real "heart-attack" performance, 7-6(7-5), then the 3rd set, and match: 6-4. YEA! And WELL DONE!
- The 2nd Round Doubles, however, again produced a match of unseeded vs. #1 seeds, with ZS facing Marina Erakovic (NZL) (yes - also #1 in Singles)/Bibiane Schoofs (NED).
- Well, this was a loss. But a fairly impressive one for ZS. Although ES took the 1st set 6-1, ZS took the 2nd set to a tie-break, but lost it 7-1. Oh well...
- Katarina continues to play well, and give the crowds great shows, and seemed, this week, to be very close to some truly spectacular victories. That's GREAT!
- Take care, Kat, play well, and HAVE FUN!
-
- Monday 4/26/04
-
This month, Katarina has been back home in Canada, playing at the Indoor Junior Nationals, at the Mayfair Parkway Racquet and Fitness Club, in Markham, Ontario, Canada, North America.
- And Kat has been playing VERY WELL, with MANY VICTORIES! YEA!
- Quite appropriately, Katarina was seeded #2 in Singles, and drew a "bye" in the 1st Round (Round of 64).
- In the 2nd Round (Round of 32), Kat faced (unseeded) Taylor Ormond - and both players gave the crowd a "rilly gud show"! Kat took the 1st set 6-4, then TO did likewise in the 2nd. Kat then grabbed the match with a 6-3 final set. YEA!
- For 3rd Round (Round of 16), it was Katarina vs. (unseeded) Monica Lalewicz. This was another good show for the crowd, with ML taking the 1st set 6-1, then Kat "turning the tide" very impressively with set wins of 6-2 and 6-0! YEA!
- In 4th Round (Quarterfinals), Kat faced the #8 seed, Marija Milik, and sent her packing with a VERY IMPRESSIVE 6-2, 6-4, victory. YEA!
- The 5th Round (Semifinals) saw Katarina facing the #4 seed, Valerie Tetreault. This was another very exciting show for the crowd, with all 3 sets scoring 6-4. Unfortunately, it was VT who got that score twice, in the 1st and 3rd sets. Oh well...
- SO: Kat was very correctly given great respect in the seeding, and drew a well-deserved "bye" in the 1st Round. Then Kat got 3 very good victories, and just barely missed a Finals match. This was a VERY GOOD Tournament for Kat in Singles! YEA!
- It was also a VERY GOOD Tournament for Katarina in Doubles! YEA for that! And YEA for Kat playing Doubles!
- Katarina teamed with Marija Milic in Doubles - they were seeded #3, and drew a "bye" in 1st Round (Round of 32). YEA!
- In the 2nd Round Doubles(Round of 16), Zoricic/Milic got a very impressive victory over (unseeded) Taylor Ormond/Steffi Wong: 6-1, 6-1. YEA!
- The 3rd Round Doubles (Quarterfinals) found ZM facing the #5 seeds, Erika Januskova/Monica Lalewicz. This was another VERY NICE victory for ZM: 6-0, 6-3. YEA!
- For the Doubles Semifinals (4th Round), it was ZM (seeded #3) vs. Sharon Fichman/Melanie Gloria (seeded #2). Well, this was a loss for ZM: 6-2, 6-2. Oh well... (But not an upset, technically.)
- This was a VERY GOOD Tournament for Katarina! Kat was given appropriately respectful seedings, and got 2 byes, 5 wins, and 2 losses. That's OK!!
- The lesson of this tourney seems to me to be this: Canada has a LOT of VERY GOOD Junior players (and Katarina is one of the VERY BEST!).
- Mostly, I hope it was GREAT FUN for everyone involved (especially Katarina)!
