HAPPY NEW YEAR!
- Katarina had a GOOD 2004, with much appropriate increased respect on the Juniors tour, and many impressive victories, in both Singles and Doubles, and much appropriate respect on the Pro tour, and many impressive matches played there.
- 2005 can be a GREAT year for Kat!
- "LIVE LIFE", as the Kinks say! ("See it through! Carry on! It's all you can do! Live life, for yourself - nobody gonna live your life for you!")
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!

Recently, Katarina has been in Morelia, Mexico, North America, at a 10K ITF Pro event.
- Kat was a direct entry into the Qualifying of both Singles and Doubles (with also Canadian Tania Rice). The conditions were Hard Court, Outdoors.
- Unfortunately, the Tournament crowd was able to see only two Kat matches, a singles and a doubles, and both were losses. Oh well...
- In the 1st Round Qualifying Singles (Round of 32), it was Claire Peterzan of Great Britain d. Kat: 6-1, 6-4. Oh well...
- This match was probably much closer than the score indicates, especially the 2nd set - but I really don't know, and am just guessing, ok?
- In the 1st Round Qualifying Doubles (Quarterfinals), it was Neuva Silva of Portugal, teamed with Gabriela Velasco-Andreu of Spain d. Zoricic/Rice: 4-2, 5-4(4). Oh well...
- My hunch is that this was another match much closer than the score indicates, but that is just my guess...
- It seems at least hugely likely that the crowds who watched these matches were glad that Kat was there (and not at all(!) 'cause she lost both!).
- And it is very nice that Kat is out there playing Pro Tennis, as only something like one millionth of 1% of people on this Earth are capable and appropriate doing so!
- Meanwhile, Kat (fortunately!) "has a life" (as they say) including: getting good Senior year High School grades, and getting into a good College or University.
- Here's hoping that this year, Kat, is your BEST EVER, so far!
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!

Last week, Katarina played close to home, and played some interesting matches!
- At the 25k Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Clay Court Outdoors event Kat was a direct entry into the Singles Qualifying and the Main Draw Doubles (with co-Canadian Jillian O'Neill).
- The crowd got some sort of "interesting" show in the 1st Round Singles Qualifying (Round of 32) as it was Kat defeated Daria Novosad of Russia: 6-0, 6-0. (Hey, it happens...) It may well have been closer than the score indicates - but maybe not...
- And the 2nd Round Singles Qualifying (Round of 16) was even less exciting and entertaining - it was Katarina Zoricic d. Lisa D'Amelio of Australia: walkover. (That happens, too...)
- So then it was on to 1st Round Main Draw (Round of 32) and finally the crowd got a good show! Unfortunately, it was a loss for Kat.
- It was Lauren Brooke Branikow (USA) d. Kat Zoricic: 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Oh well...
- On to Doubles! In the 1st Round Main Draw Doubles (Round of 16) it was likely a very memorable match for all who were there, as Zoricic/O'Neill d. Kit Carson (USA)/Julianna Gates (USA): 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. YEA!
- The 2nd Round Main Draw Doubles (Quarterfinals) was another 3-setter, but this time it was Lauren Branikow (USA)/Lauren Breadmore (AUS) d. Zoricic/O'Neill: 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Oh well...
- This was a "good" tournament for Kat, although clearly not "great". Facing Branikow twice is just odd. And 25k's can be certainly challenging, especially after months off. But several crowds saw Kat play - that's a GOOD thing!
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!

This past week, Katarina went to the West Coast (of Canada) for the 25K Tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia.
- Kat got a direct entry into the Singles Qualifying and then teamed with Elizabeth Dolan (USA) for a direct entry into the Doubles Qualifying. The conditions were: Hard Court - Outdoors.
- The 1st Round Singles Qualifying (Round of 32) gave the crowd a nice introduction (or refresher) of Kat's talent as it was Kat d. Courtney Nagle (USA): 6-1, 6-1. YEA!
- The crowd probably saw a much more exciting match in the 2nd Round Singles
Qualifying (Round of 16) as it was Katarina Zoricic d. Kavitha Krishnamurthy
(CAN): 6-3, 6-3.
YEA!
- Kat was then (appropriately!) in the 1st Round Main Draw (Round of 32) and, again, the crowd probably saw a good show! Unfortunately, it was a loss for Kat.
- It was Katie O'Brien (GBR) d. Kat Zoricic: 6-1, 6-3. Oh well...
- Meanwhile, there was also Doubles. In the 1st Round Qualifying Doubles (Quarterfinal)
Zoricic/Dolan got a Bye.
- For the 2nd Round Qualifying Doubles (Semifinals), Zoricic/Dolan gave the
crowd a good show - but it was a loss - Tiffany Eklou (USA)/Story Tweedie-Yates
(USA) d. Zoricic/Dolan: 5-3, 4-1. Oh well...
(Hard to compete with names like that, eh?)
- This was a fine tournament for Kat! These 25k's can be certainly challenging.
Most important, though, is this: several crowds saw Kat play - that's a GOOD
thing!
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!

EXCELLENT NEWS!!!
- This fall, Katarina will be matriculating at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA.
- This is a VERY GOOD THING!!!
- William and Mary is considered VERY EXCELLENT academically here in America. The College has a very interesting history (partially described here), and an apparently quite active athletics program (details available here).
- Kat was recruited to be a member of the College's Tennis Team. This is, of course, not at all surprising. And the tennis staff is reputed to be very good.
- SO: Kat has an opportunity to possibly acquire a GREAT college education, be well coached in her tennis, and play against many of her peers in American schools. WOW, THAT'S SUPER GREAT, EH?!!!
- (Then there are people who consider William and Mary to have been Regal Imperialists
who occupied a foreign country, albeit without dramatic invasion, and then
oppressed and abused and exploited the local population and their natural resources
until
they fought a war to liberate themselves from the foreign oppressor, beginning
in 1776. Some even believe the rumors that the College has been subcontacted
by the Pentagon to various "favored" companies to create a College of George and Laura in Bagdad,
Iraq. BUT WHAT DO "THEY" KNOW, ANYWAY, eh?)
- (And then there are some who question the integrity of an institution which would actually "honor" such individuals as Henry Kissinger and Margaret Thatcher. BUT WHAT DO "THEY" KNOW, eh?)
- This is an excellent school for Kat to spend some time at! There will be much appreciation of her tennis talents and abilities, as well as for her talents and abilities and opinions and creativity in "academic" things.
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!

After Vancouver, Katarina has gone back home (or near home) to play in the qualifying for the truly Big Time tournament Rogers Cup in Toronto.
- Kat got a wild card into the Qualifying (and rightly so!) but then faced a player ranked almost 10-times better than her in the 1st Round: Tathiana Garbin of Italy.
- Probably for weather reasons, this match was played on Sunday. Well, it was a double-bagel loss for Kat, yet it gave many hints to Kat's potential future greatness in tennis.
- In the 1st set, Tathiana served and held at love: 0-1. Then Kat went down 0-30 (on 2nd serves), then came back to 30-all, then was broken: 0-2. Then another love hold and 15-love was the best Kat could get in game #4: 0-4. A hold after 40-15, then a love break gave the 1st set to Tathiana: 0-6. Oh well....
- In the 2nd set there were no love holds or breaks - every game was contested.
- Kat got the 1st point of the 2nd set, but Garbin held with 4-straight: 0-1. Kat then went down 0-15 (on a second serve) and 0-30 (on a double-fault), then came back to 30-all, but then it was 30-40, and it looks like the game was lost on a double-fault: 0-2. Oh well...
- In the 3rd game, Garbin went up 30-0, then 30-15 (on a double-fault), then 40-15, 40-30, hold: 0-3. Then Kat went down 0-15 (on a double-fault), then 0-30, 15-30, 15-40, broke: 0-4. TG's serve then went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, 30-30, 40-30, hold: 0-5.
- Then Kat served and this was, finally(!), a close game. On 1st serves it went 15-0, 15-15, 30-15, then a double-fault made 30-30. No other points in this game, or match, went to double-faults. It went 30-40, deuce, add-TG, deuce, add-TG, deuce, add-TG, deuce, add-KZ, deuce, add-KZ, deuce, add-TG, deuce, add-TG, break: 0-6. Oh well....
- This was, obviously, a dismal match for Katarina, at least until the final game. I have no idea why. Probably Garbin just played better. But is she the better player?
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!

So now has begun Kat's life as a College student at William and Mary in Virginia, USA.
- Back on April 20th, the Official website of the College's teams (http://www.tribeathletics.com) announced that 4 female tennis players had "signed letters of intent" to enroll at W+M and play on the Tennis team. The others are: Lauren Cash (Upper Saddle River, NJ), Emmy Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, VA), and Barbara Zidek (Orland Park. IL).
- The press release then goes on to mention that Kat is ranked 7th in Canada 18s and has been ITF Juniors ranked 41st in Singles and 32nd in Doubles. It then reports that the team is 16-5 for the 04-05 year and ranked 20th nationally.
- A press release dated June 3rd said that a 5th had joined the "recruiting class": Klaudyna Kasztelaniec (how would you like to have to sign that at the bottom of every check you write, eh?!).
- A June 22 press release outlines the upcoming Fall season for the Tribe's tennis girls, mentioning only rising senior Megan Muth (Covington, LA) by name. (And I wonder if Megan is any relation to Ellen, the wonderful star of the TV series "Dead Like Me"?)
- An attached .pdf file lists the Tribe's 1st Fall challenge as the "13th Annual William and Mary Invitational", starting tomorrow.
- And a press release from earlier this week (9/12/06), describing the entire team and speculating on it's prospects for the season, called Kat the Tribe's "most heralded recruit"!
- PLAY ON, Kat, and HAVE FUN!
